Business owners are being sued for thousands of £££s because of discriminatory behaviour

Local HR consultant, Tara Anstee founder of Zest Expert HR Solutions is urging business owners and their employees to address discriminatory behaviour.

According to the Ministry of Justice’s “Tribunal Statistics Quarterly: April to June 2024,” the average (mean) awards for discrimination claims in 2023/24 were as follows:

  • Age Discrimination: £100,000
  • Sex Discrimination: £82,000
  • Disability Discrimination: £45,000

Tara says, “Discrimination isn’t always intentional or blatant. It’s often unconscious bias that leads to favouritism, missed opportunities or assumptions based on age, gender, race or other factors. Even the most well-meaning managers can get it wrong.

“A lot of our time is spent dealing with issues caused by managers acting in a discriminatory way. It’s frustrating because these costs, whether legal fees, my fees, loss of time and productivity, could easily be avoided with the right training.”

To address these challenges, Zest Expert HR Solutions recommends investing in training programmes, such as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Anti-Discrimination and Harassment, and Unconscious Bias training.

“The upfront cost of training is a fraction of what you might pay in legal fees, consultancy fees or the cost of rebuilding trust and productivity,” says Tara
